Community HelpersThe classroom is transformed with pictures of occupations, safety posters and play centres. Many children enjoy wearing the letter carriers hat, shirt and bag and mailing letters in our mailbox. Role-playing helps us learn co-operative skills. Our doctor, nurse, surgeon and dentist uniforms ensure the dolls receive excellent medical care. Our first visitor is Officer Norm who delights the children with his commanding voice and sense of humour. He shows handcuff tricks to make them look like the letter M or the number 3. He then leads the class outdoors where he teaches us not to play between parked cars, not to walk close to the curb and how to cross the road. Mrs. Jarvis, the "Safety Lady", gives a presentation using puppets and a traffic light to teach the children about safety. She also teaches them to call 911 in an emergency. The public health nurse tells the children about sun protection such as hats, sunglasses and sunblock. The class is told NEVER to touch needles found on the ground. Sometimes we have a dentist visit to talk to the children about keeping our mouths clean. Our last field trip is to the fire station. A firefighter usually dons his gear and explains to the children that he may look a little scary but that we must never hide from them because they are our friends who have come to help us.
