Zoo Theme

For up to three weeks, our classroom will be transformed into the Bloor West Zoo. Pictures, photographs, books, puppets and even a safari hat help create our zoo environment. At the sand table, our regular toys are replaced with zoo animals, fences, rocks and sticks.

Our water table is filled with alligators, hippos and snakes. At the play-dough table, the children enjoy making zoo animals with our cookie cutters as well as molding the dough to create their own animals.

Some children work together on our challenging Canadian wildlife floor puzzles as well as our new large table puzzle. A flannel board zoo set, stuffed animals and many puppets provide hours of fun. The children also like going upstairs to view the video of the Metro Zoo.

In the gym, the children demonstrate their wonderful imaginations as they turn themselves into lions, tigers, elephants, kangaroos and seals.

In the art area, the children draw, cut and glue their own polar bear or tiger hand puppets.

The children enjoy a sprinkling of factual books on wolves, hippos, raccoons and camels. Along with African animals, we also have a good representation of Canadian Wildlife books.

Zoo songs and finger plays included the following:

bulletThe Tiger
bulletThe Elephant Goes Like This and That
bulletThe Seal
bulletWe’re Going to the Zoo
bulletAlice the Camel
bulletFive Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
bulletThree Little Monkeys Swinging in the Tree

The last song, Three Little Monkeys, was the class favourite because the children were able to use the crocodile puppet and the monkeys.
